| Summary | Focus of this thesis lies on the exploration of the travel decision process. The typology of decision making behaviour, derived from the general theory of consumer behaviour, was to be transferred into touristic application. The question, if general theories can be transferred and whether adaptations are necessary, was to be clarified. In addition, information about the two essential elements of the travel decision making process - the search for information and part decisions - and their mutual relationship was to be found. Confrontation is necessary, due to the different signals from literature, regarding the (non)comparability of tourism with other products. On the one hand the characteristics of the touristic product and the need of special handlings are stressed; whilst at the same time the use of general non adopted concepts is accepted. If there is really a need for special handling of touristic products, the direct transfer of general theories gives cause for criticism. One year travel panel is the database of the investigation, as panel design provides the possibility to record processes. The results are characterized as follows: The typology of decision making behaviour should not be employed in the tourist context, without various adaptations. The effect of the variables involvement, perceived risk and product knowledge have also (partly) shown influences on decision making process. In addition information and decision baskets were identified. The investigation also leads to insights about the stability of decisions making process. The examination of the decision-making process created three types of typical processes, which all focus on the beginning of the decision making process. |
